How can I get involved with FIRST?

If you are interested in starting a FTC or FLL team, information is provided on FIRST's website. If you are interested and live near our facility, contact us to schedule a visit and we can provide mentoring for a future team!

What ages are FIRST programs for?

There are three FIRST programs: FIRST Lego League (FLL), FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC).

FLL has different levels: FLL Discover (PreK-Grade 1), FLL Explore (Grades 2-4), and FLL Challenge (Grades 4-8), and is ideal for elementary school students.

FTC has one level and is for middle school to high school students (Grades 7-12).

FRC is for high schoolers aged 14 to 18.

What is the difference between the FIRST programs?

The differences between the three different FIRST programs are mostly in difficulty and parts used. For example, FLL utilizes Legos, and is much easier for beginners and young children to learn new engineering skills and programming. FTC is an intermediate program, where participants will use metal components, and will be exposed to more advanced hardware and more advanced programming (most teams use a form of Java); however, it is still very beginner-friendly, so don't be intimidated! FRC is mostly for experienced students because it involves industrial-sized robots and is much more advanced than the previous two programs.
